Hi,

I have some free resources on my site for people to download.

I would like to keep track of the numbers of downloads.

(But i would rather people don't need to enter any personal details to be able to download anything - so would like just a tracker of the number of downloads)

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated,

I have exactly the same situation and question.  I guess we could list them as free products and track them through a shopping cart, but I don't want people to have to go through those steps.  I just want to know how many times a certain file stored on SquareSpace is accessed.

It's not the best solution but maybe use Dropbox Transfer as the link instead of uploading to SqSp? DBT notifies you of downloads.
