Changing background colour on different pages

Hello,

I'd like to have one particular colour on my homepage and a different one on the others.

I've tried two different ways, none of which are working.

First one was adding to Page Settings > Advanced > Header

<style>
  div#site {
    background: white;
}
</style>

And second was adding to Design > Custom CSS

<style>
.collection-type-index #about {
  background-color:#FAFAFA!important;}
</style>

I'm really confused why none of those are working.

I just need my home page to be orange and all the other ones to be white.

Can anyone help me out?

Each template needs different code. Each page type needs different code. Where did you get above code?

I got those codes from searching for solution on forums...

Add to Home > Design > Custom CSS

.homepage main#page .section-background {
    background: yellow;
}
