Why does photo gallery automatically turn into main banner?

Does anyone know why when I put an image gallery at the top of my page that it automatically turns into the main banner for my page? I just wanted to use it as a rotating image gallery to promote things. But when it turns into the main banner for my page, it formats it with a gray faded gradient over it and resizes it, which is what I don't want. Anyone know how to fix this?

For V 7.1 It's the  default system mode. To change: enter Edit mode, hover your mouse over your image. A pencil should appear in the upper right-hand corner of your image section. Select the pencil. In the sub-editor select 'Background' in the the top row and toggle your background to 'Inset'.
