bulk uploading of images in one fell swoop?

Sort of like the problem of not being able to delete unused imported images that just cause chaos...particularly those brought in by the template, I now have the opposite problem as well:
I want to be able to mass import in one fell swoop the images from a folder on my local computer.  How to do this?  Trying to manage about 200+ images for a catalog in the image editor is too damn tedious--particularly when some of them are visually similar.  Surely there is a simpler way? 

While at it, is there a way to toggle so that the caption automatically just reads the title of the .jpg file?

To bulk upload photos, you can use Gallery Block

To caption use .jpg file, you need to use JavaScript, I solved similar case for a client today, but it is complex
