You can't defer the built-in Squarespace scripts. However, the following articles may be useful to anyone who is trying to improve their site's speed:

Reducing your page size for faster loading

Formatting your images for display on the web

My site is loading slowly

Hi, I'm Paul, founder of SF Digital, a specialist company helping Squarespace users by building the features that Squarespace didn't include.
Explore our range of Squarespace Extensions, including the Wishlist, and Datepicker Extension or book a Squarespace Expert for 1:1 help. Note that links in my posts may be affiliate links.

This recommendation is not one that you can follow. It’s not a ‘problem’, it’s just the way Squarespace works. Generic page speed tests won’t know that this Squarespace-specific file must load in this way.

This is a "problem" if this is the way SquareSpace works and site visitors are backing out of a site due to load times. It's no longer a "problem" if we are able to rectify the way SquareSpace handles javascript. I also just did a check on my client's site and got the same score regarding the parsing of JavaScript on his SquareSpace site.
