No Template option please help!

Recommended Posts

You use SS 7.1?

All sites in version 7.1 share the same template. That means:

  • They all have the same style options and features.
  • They all use sections to add content to pages.

There isn't a need to switch templates, so that option isn't available in version 7.1. Instead, to try out different looks for your site:

  • Change your global styles.
  • Add new pages with different starter layouts.
  • Create new sections to change a page's feel. For example, add a section with a background image at the top to create a page banner.

When you build a new site on 7.1 you choose a 7.1 "template" which is really just a layout, color palate design different from another 7.1 "template" . After its built if you want to change "templates", you tweak your site to look like a "template" you didn't choose. Unlike 7.0 where changing from one template  to another in the same family is one thing but can be quite a challenge and a huge change in style and features from one template family to another. The second usually requires a new buildout.

Why did they do this? Is it supposed to be better?

It depends on what level you are as a designer or want to be. 7.1 is mobile driven, easy to set up, not a lot of control so harder to mess up. I want control, greater flexibility as to what I can do with the template family I am using. Don't want all my sites to be me too looking. I use a lot of code, so I mess up every now and then, but I fix it, I learn what each template family can do (and some like Avenue are a one template family) Brine family has a lot.   I would choose to stay in the Brine Family with 7.0 instead of going to 7.1 because they look a lot alike. 7.0 really has only about 18 templates, because there are 18 families. Each family very different than the other one, so it takes a bit of time to learn them before choosing a template to build on.  I  choose to stay with 7.0, I have five sites there now.
