Keep first and last names separate in form storage

My form has a name field, which shows two fields "First name" and "Last name". The form is connected to Google Drive for storage. 

The stored form combines those two fields into a single field called "Name". How can I keep them separate?

I have confirmed with Squarespace tech support that it is not possible to keep those two fields separate. This seems like a bug to me, particularly as it works when Mailchimp is used for storage. In any case, it has been passed along as a feature request.

There is a workaround that is pretty easy and seems obvious in hindsight: don't use the built-in Name form field. Instead, create two text input fields, one for "First name", and one for "Last name".
