Thumbnail image size Native template

If I add an excerpt to an article it gets rid of the main image for it. Therefore, I have to resort to using a thumbnail image which is small and circular. Is there a way to have the thumbnail display as a normal image?

Just post an image with a click through url to a page which can be on or off site. The image can be larger than a summary page thumbnail . 

Sorry, I don't understand what you are suggesting here. Assuming my issue is the same as the OP, what I have is an image that appears cropped in a small circle on my first post, which looks terrible and not at all like what the template example shows. What do I need to do differently?
