Youtube hosted video vs animated GIF

Hi folks

I'm wanting to have an animated image on the top of my homepage in a full width banner showcasing some recent work. I'm wondering for speed/site performance, is it better to have a hosted MP4 on vimeo/youtube or an animated GIF? The animated GIF I have created is about 12mb so wondering if a youtube video which is pulled through is better for site speed?

This is the video link

This is the gif which squarespace seems to compress from an image quality when its uploaded.spacer.pngspacer.png

The site is here and the password is: Test

I'm having problems uploading the GIF onto the forum so I can't show it unfortunately. It is essentially the same animation as the youtube video.

Hi guys, incase anyone is interested I signed up for a basic Vimeo account and hosted it on there, it seems to work well and loads faster than a big GIF>

Hey, @AdaptiveWhen adding a link from a 'basic' vimeo account, do you not get a warning that links from basic accounts don't work?

That's what i've been getting, pretty frustrating.

Youtube links work, but the quality isn't as good as i'd hoped.

Cheers.
