Since the latest Google Core update, loading speed (including image file size) has been an extremely high priority and has severely reduced our traffic. Why on earth isn't SS prioritising this? BlateCo
Our mobile load speed is atrocious. Please. Webp format us, and make it so it can automatically convert ALL of our pictures for us. THAT would be SOMETHING. Brainbuster and KrisRae 1 1 Link to comment
KrisRae
Hey There SQ platform developers. I'm nudging this thread to request that you enable support for WebP and JP2. For the sake of load-times on us portfolio-displaying creatives, we need to show more work than the 5mb "suggested size" currently allows. I'm looking at images sized 1500px on the long edge that are 400-600kb as JPEGs vs. 40-70kb size when converted to WebP. Let's get ahead of the curve here, thanks! Beyondspace 1 Link to comment

tfraley
I feel a deep sense of sadness witnessing the ongoing absence of this implementation. As someone who wholeheartedly supported SquareSpace for their remarkable dedication during the 9/11 incident, it is disheartening to see that they seem to have lost their touch. I cannot comprehend the reasons behind their lack of progress, from the absence of a clearly defined upgrade path for version 7.0 to the omission of crucial features like this. It is genuinely disappointing, and I find myself pondering what has become of SquareSpace. Beyondspace, Brainbuster, NathanV and 1 other 4 Link to comment

Joel_Legal
Where is Squarespace on the support of WebP and AVIF images? Our SEO is being decimated with the limitations of PNG, JPG and GIF as your only supported formats. Even Squarespace 7.0 was better than 7.1. I am being forced to script buttons to work in specific areas of the <header> because of the limitations of 7.1 design limitations. Between forcing the use of scripting and poor performance with old graphic formats, Google Ads are plummeting in value for our company. Help! Beyondspace 1 Link to comment

JustinVeenema
Just adding another vote for WebP here. 👋 I've migrated a few sites from Webflow to Squarespace for the ease of use that SQSP provides, but we've seen a big dip in our SEO rankings across the board. My page-load speeds using both Pingdom and PageSpeed Insights are really poor. This same page is built in Webflow (with all the same assets, but the images are WebP) and the scores are drastically different. Squarespace: Mobile: 31 Desktop: 47 Webflow: Mobile: 89 Desktop: 91 Any update from the team on this would be greatly appreciated! emm.farines
Hi all, This has now been raised as a feature request. If you haven't done so already, please go and vote for it here: The more votes we have, the more likely it will be treated as a priority. For SVGs you can also vote here: Beyondspace 1 Link to comment

All in the name of .webp! (and .svg!) obwohl
It's a shame that after 3 years of constant complaints SS still does not offer webp as an option they simply ignore this. I might cancel my SS sub after my first year because of that and switch to sth. else. AndrewATX, M_Fancy_Sites, Beyondspace and 1 other 4 Link to comment
AltitudeMountainGuides
It's now 4 years later. SS has ignored this known issue. If you prioritize SEO/ranking on google, SS is simply a bad option. These once "next gen" image file types are now standard and SS is lagging embarrassingly behind. Is there any excuse? Brainbuster and Beyondspace 2 Link to comment
Beyondspace
I got something as a workaround while waiting for Squarespace to support webp, it will not require you to re-upload images, Squarespace Images will be served using Cloudinary CDN or Imagekit.io and supported browsers can see webp while other still get the origin format The code is available in my post, made a test using Chrome Network tab imagekit-webp-delivery.mp4 Edited July 27 by Beyondspace Widle 1 BeyondSpace - Squarespace Website Developer 🖼️ Lightbox Studio (Enable Pinch/Zoom on lightbox, video lightbox and much more) 🗓️ Delivery Date Picker (Squarespace Date picker form field) 💫 Gallery block 7.1 workaround 🥳 No-code customisations for Squarespace (+100 Spark plugin customisations) 🥳 Freemium Squarespace Widget Templates (+1000 Elfsight Templates) If you find my answer useful, let's leave a like or upvote so others with the same issue can find their solution. It is recommended using images that are between 1500 and 2500 pixels wide and under 500 KB. You should also keep overall page size under 5 MB for loading time optimization. JordanFarr
Is there a better provider who will actually produce decent page load times? What are our alternatives to SquareSpace? It seems like they have no interest in catching up with WebP or SVG. And I'm right at the beginning of my project, so I have very little holding me down. Beyondspace 1 Link to comment
Susana_SQSP
Hi @GSAauctions, While there's isn't a way to check page size on Squarespace, you can do so through Chrome Developer Tools, for example.
