Hello, I'm aiming to have a project page unlisted, that is not seen in the projects while it is worked on or acts as a template. Possible?

thanks

Just to add my disappointment here as well – Why has Squarespace rolled out 7.1 and removed so many features from 7.0? I feel like I've gone back in time when I "upgraded" to 7.1 from 7.0 – and simple fixes like this are nowhere in sight after three years.

need a proper fix for this problem, I can't be editting a page in a portfolio section with it live – it looks unprofessional, sloppy and is confusing for users.

I enjoy using squarespace for its simplicity and code module – but what the heck is happening over there? Why has the product stagnated so severely??

Same frustrations here. Seems like such a basic feature to implement for thousands of users who need this. Where is everyone going if they leave SS? I have had great success setting up a free portfolio page on Adobe Portfolio. Kind of clunky for customization but not bad at all for a basic portfolio -- curious if others have good alternatives?

Instead of leaving Squarespace, why not just use 7.0. Index pages? Index pages work well with pages and gallery pages. They don't have prebuilt layouts, but once you add your own blocks or use a gallery page, you can disable or enable the page, move them in and out of an index page, like down to the unlinked section of your site while working on them. You can create a "project" page in the unlinked section and drag it into an index page when it is ready to be viewed. There is no page duplicaton feature in 7.0 for any page or blog post which would be a nice thing to have, just as you can duplicate a project in 7.1 but the moving pages in and out of an index is very helpful. I as a photographer have many gallery pages and pages with gallery blocks in the unlinked section of my site that I can swap with the pages in my index whenever I want to. It seems logical to me that if you really miss certain features in 7.0 that 7.1 does not have, then just use 7.0 There is a very good reason why it is still around after all.

There are a number of 7.0 pages with index pages. Here is a list and how the page thumbnails in the index will appear by default, if you want a "project" page, use a blank page with text and image blocks and image gallery blocks if you wish and drag it into the index page.

  • Avenue - Grid with required thumbnails (this is the site I use) Single template family. This is one of Squarespace's oldest templates still supported by them. Very popular with various types of artists and photographers.

  • https://avenue-demo.squarespace.com/ and my site is here:

  • my random views

  • All but one page in my index is a gallery page, the very bottom right thumbnail takes you to a page with a gallery block, this could easily be considered a project page. As I said I can drag pages in and out of my index, disable them enable them and I can use them as single pages on my site as well, the gallery page changes from a stacked to a slideshow with thumbnails when viewed outside of the index. This can be done by moving the page or using a second URL to get to it if still in the index. I believe this to be true for all the templates here.

  • Bedford, Anya, Bryant, Hayden - Stacked

  • Brine, Basil, Clay, Feed, Foster, Greenwich, Hatch, Heights, Hunter, Hyde, Jaunt, Juke, Keene, Lincoln, Marta, Mercer, Mojave, Motto, Nueva, Rally, Rover, Sonora, Thorne - Stacked,  this template family has the appearance that 7.1 was inspired by with one difference, standard parallax scrolling which can be turned on and off, no code required. I have a couple of active Brine sites. It is considered by many professional web designers to be the best template family you can use from any web hosting company.

  • Flatiron - Grid with required thumbnails

  • Forte- Slideshow with required thumbnails

  • https://forte-demo.squarespace.com/ ( I like this template a lot!)

  •  Alex, Stacked

  • Momentum - Slideshow with required thumbnails

  • https://momentum-demo.squarespace.com/ unique template with a horizontal scrolling image only header and footer navigation bar

  • Montauk, Julia, Kent, Om - Grid with required thumbnails

  • https://montauk-demo.squarespace.com/blog-montauk very classic, clean lines, elegant template family

  • Pacific, Bryler, Charlotte, Fulton, Horizon, Naomi - Stacked

  • https://pacific-demo.squarespace.com/ similar in looks to the Brine family no parallax scrolling.

  • Supply - Grid wtih required thumbnails

  • https://supply-demo.squarespace.com/ artsy  template with sidebar navigation

  • Tremont, Carson, Henson - Slideshow with optional thumbnails is one of the most innovative template families, each one very different from the other but having the same design options.

  • https://tremont-demo.squarespace.com/ is designed to be a minimum-page site with long scrolling.

  • https://carson-demo.squarespace.com/ is one of the youngest 7.0 sites hamburger along with big bold links to work pages.

  • Very simple text-driven site

  • York, Artesia, Harris, Lange, Jasper, Shibori, Taylor - Grid with optional thumbnails

  • https://york-demo.squarespace.com/ An in-your-face template that is used by artists and photographers, an Andy Warhol kind of look.

  • If you wish to look at any other templates that I didn't post a link to, just change the name of the template to whichever one you would like to see, and if necessary backspace the address in your browser bar to the forward slash.

  • name-demo-squarespace.com/

  • more info about 7.0 in general

  • A couple of notes. Almost all, if not all, of the 7.0 sites have a 7.1 look alike. For example, the 7.1 template, that looks like  Avenue, is  Chase Nevins, and I have worked with that template.  However,  I like working with my index page, it is an integral part of my site, so I am sticking with Avenue, for myself, for now.

  • I think that Squarespace realizes that 7.0 and 7.1 may not both be for everyone all the time, and that is why they co-exist. All the 7.1 templates can technically be for everyone using 7.1 because they are in reality just one template with over a hundred design start points (that look like 7.0 templates) and anyone can be made to look like any other. 7.0 is far more complicated than that. Templates cannot be changed to look like any other one, even in the same family it is difficult, so 7.0 has a template switch option. But use it with caution! Not everything moves over.

  • I hope this helps. I am sure there are other questions like accounts billing,  trials, etc for anyone moving from 7.1 to 7.0 or the other way around.

So it's been three years, and it seems Squarespace is not going to fix this humongous issue. Has anyone come up with a solution to this? Moving back to 7.0 is not a viable option, since 7.0 is very restrictive and outdated. It feels like a huge chore to move the whole site to another platform. But that's what I'm looking into atm, since building portfolio draft pages is such a basic necessity.

Moving back to 7.0 is not a viable option, since 7.0 is very restrictive and outdated.

7.0  is still used and supported by Squarespace and there are many good-looking, classic, and unique templates, with certain styles, that the  7.1 templates, as good as they are,  cannot totally duplicate. If you are referring to the 7.0 configuration options, I would not say they are outdated, there are some advanced 7.1 settings but some 7.0 options 7.1 does not have that are still wanted as this thread states. For many website designers, especially new ones, 7.1 is easier to use due in part to the location of fonts, color palettes, and other site styles.

Fluid Engine design still has a few issues but it looks very promising and will get better over time.

As far as portfolio/ project pages, I do not expect any major change there, once you create one, it is in a sense one page that can be expanded and reduced by adding or deleting project layouts, but you cannot disable or move a project out of the portfolio, it is more like a block than an actual page or like a blog page you cannot move a single blog post out of the blog into the unlinked section of your site.

I found a workaround from one of the countless forum entries about this same problem. You can hide a portfolio child page from the main grid by using this code (replace the number of the child page with the subpage number):

.portfolio-grid-overlay .grid-item:nth-child(1) {
	display: none;
}

I reached out to SS about this issue and, as known, it's currently not a feature/function built into the site. They were passing the feature request to their development team but for now, still no solution outside of the custom code suggested in this forum.

That said, the person I chatted with on support suggested using the "Save Sections" function as a work around. It's a bit clunky for sure, but you can try it: https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/360027987711-Page-sections#toc-save-sections

@tuanphan You are clearly the Squarespace savior on this one so I'm hoping you could help me.

Like everyone else, I want to find a way to hide draft portfolio pages for the site I'm working on. I'm new to CSS and am doing my best to apply the codes that have been posted in this thread, but no luck.

Could you help me figure out the steps to how to hide one of the pages listed in the URL below:

https://den.film/directors

I'm using the Hover: Fixed option to display the pages.

Please let me know if you need any other info here. Thanks so much in advance.

omg THANK YOU!! This worked once I inserted my own URL chunk into it and its such a life saver!!

For some reason squarespace does not let you remove the grid items without completely deleting the entire project that it links to and I was losing my mind trying to figure it out!

Hi All!

I am working on an interior designer portfolio and some projects are 'under construction'. I still want the image to  appear in the portfolio grid, however I don't want to be able to click onto the project and be directed to a new page. Is there a way I can disable the page but still have the image appear in grid?
Thank you

  • Solution

I have created a free, comprehensive code solution for creating "draft" portfolio items:
https://schwartz-edmisten.com/blog/how-to-set-squarespace-portfolio-items-to-draft

The reason I felt the need to create this code solution is because a client came to me needing this exact functionality. The existing accepted solution in this thread only takes into account hiding the post on the main portfolio page, but people can still navigate to it using the pagination from another post. Also, because it requires changing the URL slug, if you want to set an older post to draft that has already been indexed, then people will get a 404 because the URL has changed when they click that link.

My code takes all of this into account. Pagination of draft items are hidden, and the URL slug doesn't need to be changed. You simply change the post title from Post Title to (Draft) Post Title. If someone tries to navigate directly to the Draft item using its URL, they will be redirected to the main portfolio page.

I think I have truly thought of everything with this plugin and it should be a good solution until Squarespace wakes up and finally implements the feature themselves. I have a video on the post that walks through the entire functionality if you are curious about how to use it.

I would love to hear people's feedback! Hopefully this saves some people from needing to leave the platform.

I forgot which command I have to add at the end of the URL-SLUG of a project, so it will not be shown public.  For example the URL-SLAG is /place/nice. What do I have to put at the end of /place/nice/?.

Thanks in advance

Solved: Found it. /draft is what has to be written, to take it off 😉

Are you referring to "draft" in this workaround:

I had forgotten that tuanphan's solution does not prevent the page from appearing in the navigation. I have now gone through the whole post again and tested all the suggestions. What doesn't work with any of the codes is removing the page from the navigation.
All I had to do was start the post at the end. The solution was already written right above my own question. How cool is this code that Chris provides? It actually works. The page comes out of the navigation. It is also well explained in the video on his site. Really respect and many thanks for this solution that SS itself has not managed for 3 years.

Kind regards

Many thanks @tuanphan You are a life saver. This saved me from

option A - deleting tons of content

option B - going back to adobe portfolios
