Border around Multiple Paragraphs

I am trying to add a border around a recipe markdown. 

I have added

.recipeBorder {
     border: 2px solid #133547;
     padding: 10px;
     outline: #133547 solid 5px;
     outline-offset: 5px;
   }

to the custom CSS and then in the markdown itself added

<div class="recipeBorder">

my text

</div>

The problem is instead of having separate lines for my recipe it all becomes one paragraph ... is there a way to keep the formatting and install the border?
