Brine Portfolio Navigation Structure Question

Hi all,

I am in the process of structuring my Brine template.  My site is mainly for a portfolio of design work. The home page is an index page, in the index page I have a gallery that contains a thumbnail of each project and links to the project page.  However on the top navigation I want to have a section called WORK that when clicked on shows this gallery of work by its self (and would also like to add a feature that sorts the projects by genre) and then the viewer can click on each project.

I am struggling to figure out how to structure this since the gallery is in the index. How do I make the portfolio section its own item on the navigation and also a gallery on my home index page?? Attached is an image of what i am trying to achieve. Thanks!

I tried adding the portfolio as an index page and a folder but these didnt work the way i wanted it.
