Squarespace serve static files via multiple geographically distributed content delivery networks (CDNs) to ensure the data is served from the datacenter closest to the visitor’s location. The url is fixed as static1.squarespace.com followed by a string of random characters and the file name. You cannot change this.

However, if you want to share a direct link to the PDF you could share it using https://www.bakdshop.com/s/BakdHolidays_20.pdf instead (domain name + /s/ + filename).

Hi Paul, are you aware of whether your feedback is still valid currently? All our product image urls start with https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/ and when we replace with domain name + /s /+ filename it does not work. Is this approach not valid for the -cdn image urls?  Thanks.

This thread is about 'static' files, not image files. For example, when you add a PDF, DOC or XLS file to your site for visitors to download. If you're asking about a static file, please include a few details of the page where we'll find it.

If your question is about images, you may want to start a new thread/question 🙂

Thanks for the clarification Paul. Clear now. Yes I was asking about image files and since it does not appear that the solution works for image files, I won't start a new thread. I guess we are stuck with the 5,000 character gobbledygook image URL that Squarespace bequeaths on us in their own wisdom.

Is there a way to redirect an old/invalid static address (pasted below for reference)? In an external report we provided a hyperlink to a pdf on our website using the entire static1 address, but then when we updated the pdf file and deleted the old one, that old hyperlink no longer works. Is there a way to use that old address to redirect to the new file? Or is there a way to assign the old address to the new file? (There's no way to change the report hyperlink). Thanks!!!!

No. These are CDN links and are unique. You cannot reuse them.

For future reference, when posting a link to a file it's best to use the link that uses your own domain. Then, if you later replace the file within another one of the same name, the link will keep working.

I'm guessing no-one has found a way to replace the CDN link with something that looks a bit more professional (hides the squarespace URL?).

I'm in the process of putting a training website together and have another one in the pipeline but would really like the PDFs to open and display the URL of the website I am creating.

Hi @paul2009,

So it is possible for a PDF to show:
https://domain.com/name-of-pdf.pdf vs
https://static1.squarespace.com/static/456.../name-of-pdf.pdf?

Or is it just impossible?

Thanks,

Roland

You can share the PDF using https://domain.com/s/name-of-pdf.pdf but when the user views it on the site, the other URL (https://static1.squarespace.com/...) will always appear in the address bar.

Thanks for clarifying Paul. This being Job Descriptions, it might be better to create a page for it vs a PDF.
