Why is it so hard to create a simple image carousel?

I would also like to know why it is so hard to add a carousel with all of the images fitting automatically to the same height, whether portrait or landscape. I am a graphic designer have a long time Squarespace user and I still can't manage to build one. It really should not be this difficult.
