Yes they really need to address this issue - surely it can’t be that difficult. Open graph is the solution for those can insert code https://kaydee.net/blog/open-graph-image/ but you need an upgraded account to do this - maybe that’s why they don’t feel the need to address this issue. Disappointing. Hope someone from Squarespace reads this one day.

Same problem and doesn’t look like Squarespace cares all that much - Opengraph is the solution with those with coding experience https://kaydee.net/blog/open-graph-image/ but unless you have upgraded there isn’t a way to insert code.
