TABS / SUBTABS on page - best practices

Hello, I'd like to use tabs / sub-tabs within a page navigation to shorten the page. I tried everything the template offers but besides a "restaurant style menu" - absolutely useless for my purpose, I didn't find anything similar. I'm afraid I'll have to either code this feature or use one of the available plugins. Did anyone have the same problem? Can you please recommend a plug-in that worked for you?
