Google does not use the TITLE tag to show the listings in Google like it did before. This is something that has been going on, from memory about 18 months now. If you read Googles Webmasters blog you will find a post detailing this. Do not expect to be able to define what comes out in the SERPS. This change is most likely driven to give more visibility stand-out appearance to the Advertising blocks on the page, where keywords are inserted.
Meta description: very difficult. Generally and historically Google would sniff a page for the keyword in the user's search query and then show a text snippet around that text. This happens to a lesser extent now. Microsoft used to be very good at using the meta-description.
Meta-description length does not have to be within the realms of 150-160 characters long because, there is no direct correlation between the listing and the meta-description because of previous paragraph. The 150-160 character rule was set because it was the length of the available space in a Google underneath the SERPS.  It really had very little to do with SEO as a ranking mechanism, but it was easy and so most tools recommended this for that purpose.
Therefore you can quite happily ignore this constraint knowing that at least you have more words you can insert into a meta-description to have at least keyword presence and the ability to have some kind of control over it, instead of Google sniffing your page and randomly pulling out text it thinks will support the search query.
    Good luck.

Let's zoom out here! It looks like the issue is that you are worried about a canonical error? Canonical is a clue for search engines in case you have multiple pages - for example in an e-commerce view where you might have computers indexed under a product category but it might also appear under a processor type category, so you would canonical the information architecture you wanted to prioritise on one of the pages.
Tools such as the ahrefs one are going to go through your website and crawl against a quite limited and subject to errors response.
    If you google
info: https://www.gravityonestudio.com/home you will not see it in the index, instead you will see this page:
    info: https://www.gravityonestudio.com/
    If you browser this:
vies-source:https://www.gravityonestudio.com/home you can find the canonical on this page pointing to https://www.gravityonestudio.com/
That means that while the AHREF is throwing a wobbler on your website, Google is quite happily understanding what you are doing and indexing the website properly.
I don't know what @meganmedaris is the problem you have with your site, but I don't see an SEO problem here, just a software tool telling a webmaster to jump through hoops for no apparent reason. From my side it does seem that SS handles this pretty well, straight out the box as it has done for our own website.
If you have something more specific and it's something we can help with, drop a message here and when we check in again, we'll see what your problem is

    Some of mine.

    - Conditional email address acceptances (block gmail etc)
    - An effective friend referral product that plugins in and syncs properly
    - An effective way to serve gated content within a non member area, thus rendering the public end of website a more effective pre-sale mecchanism.
    -  The ability to style as a page that gates member content.
    - Ability to create a timed blog that will auto-publish according to a schedule set when creating this content, so that a member that joins the member area will have a blog type publish itself after X days, and then publish other items in the blog schedule according to the schedule you set.
    - Abilty to sell a blog collection via the shop, so that when purchased the blog appear in the member area for that person.
    - Staggered learning paths with publish schedules that start when a guest signs up.
    That should keep you busy.

There are loads of unused Javascript libraries that SS loads by default and which cannot be removed or optimized. This mostly affects MOBILE performance scores.
You can use things like PRELOAD and PREFETCH DNS to make optmisations.
As this is something that has been discussed for a good 2 years. My guess is that eventually SS will make the changes but they will only be available on new templates and you will therefore have to rebuild everything on those templates.
Nothing you can do about that.

Sorry but I would not do that, I would ditch the cover page and implement hreflang properly and manually across the website There are some scripts that can be used to inject code so that language versions are replaced in the  menus, to avoid having two language menus appearing at the same time on a page.
You can use FAQs to bump up optimisation on a page once you have established Google thinks that the page should be ranking for. You can use Google Search Console to get a sense of this.
Here is an example of the code I was talking about
    https://www.bradgood.net/articles/multi-language-content-on-any-squarespace-template
You might need to setup redirects within the website to remap pages to the new structure, and HREFLANG will help ensure that the right google index is indexing the right version of the website.

Note that since August 2021 Google is rewriting the SERP titles so what you have in your TITLE tag may not appear in the SERP as the blue headline.
This is likely to give their paying advertisers more opportunity to stand out in the search results by being able to include keywords in the Main Highlighted piece of text of their ads.
Basically pretty much forget having control but as Ziggy says, if your site has a certian critical mass of traffic you may be able to remove "site links" from being shown.

    Nice post.
The problem is that these methodologies are being used by everyone and the datasets that are being accessed are limited, even if everyone is saying that they come from their own unique source.  Even Google's own keyword suggestions tool will only show you decent data if you are spending money in Google Ads.
Add to that the fact that nearly every commercial position - IE a keyword that has commercial value - is taken up by a paid-advertising slot, which are then followed by organic positions that are so far down the page as to be almost worthless for ranking and lead-generation purposes. Then factor in personalized listings and the whole thing becomes unmeasurable due to variances based on their past search history.
I think analyzing the search market for your segment is the most important thing to do and to then isolate the elements of pages as a clue to what people actually want to find against a search phrase. SEO has long-term value but I might be more inclined to run a short-term paid search campaign for keywords the "tools" say are important and then look at engagement metrics of those audiences to help isolate the keyword choice to then recurse back up to the SEO task.  You could do this on a different web-domain as it is just R&D.
Bear in mind that Google Ads now use what's called close-variants so the keyword you type in might not actually be the keyword the advertiser targeted. I would also make sure that the website ticks all the core web vitals box.
What I would also say is that if you are launching a website from scratch, try and make sure as much of the optimisation is done as possible so that on the first visit by search you have everything in place. If you have a website and are re-optimising page elements significantly expect up to 4 months to pass before you can reliably consider the pages to have been re-indexed and settled properly.
This is not replying at the previous posters who also bring their views that are valuable, but I hope this can help others.

How then do you make your business stand out from the rest?
My advice is to look broader than search.

I'll say one thing and someone will say the opposite, that's because this is so low-level and nuanced.
I would only give search engines a page - especially if it is the first time it is being indexed - when it is ready for indexing.

setup tracking first - before you run any kind of campaign or marketing activity make sure that you have every commercially interesting touch point on your website setup for tracking. This means email addresses, telephone numbers, dedicated form submit URLS that you can capture as form-sends, you can also setup your most important pages as Intent triggers. This means for example if you have a page that contains your contact address you can trigger that page as a goal.

    To put this into context
If you run a Google Ads campaigns without tracking you will know that people arrived at your website. This makes it impossible for your to distinguish between browsers and people that are interested in your product/service. If you deliver a visitor to the website and they go through your website and also spend time on your contact page, you can determine that they may have a high interest in your business. You can then create AUDIENCES using Google Analytics either against Google Events or against Goals which then allows you to create remarketing campaigns. What's more if you have some logic to what you are capturing you can segment your audiences.
    For example:
I know that everyone in Audience X has shown an interest in my company so I will setup and run a Google Ad with an offer, or with a link to a piece of content on my blog that is going to provide these people with a greater understanding that I am a real person and my company can be trusted.

I think it would be time for SquareSpace to incorporate some of the feedback they will have received since launching these member areas to a version 2.00 to bring them up to speed with some of the popular use cases and to keep the members areas portfolio within SquareSpace instead of letting third-parties provide that functionality.

You can just add the GA4 code in  code-injection and it will work. You can send GA4 events if instead you do the implementation using Google Tag Manager.
The question is more a case of why use GA4 when Universal Analytics is actually way more stable at the moment. I wouldn't touch GA4 for at least a year, we run GA4 just for data collection.
I would not expect SS to support GA4 - in terms of Events etc, for a while simply because no-one wants to touch it with a bargepole.
