ryannell reacted to JessicaM in Seeking feedback on business website - why is my google page speed score so low, particularly on mobile?
@ryannell This is great!! So glad you found it useful and I love hearing about the changes you made!
As far as colors, I would either a) create a new logo and define your site's color palette based on the colors you choose for the logo or b) choose your colors based on the images you use on the site. If you need help picking colors that work well together, try searching "color palette" on Pinterest or play around with coolors.co. 🙂

Hey @ryannell!
Here's my suggestions -
- Definitely swap the navigation so that it's at the top instead of the side. No one likes to read with their head tilted 90 degrees 🙂
- I would consider a different color palette. The two colors don't really compliment each other, nor are they very attractive colors! I know it's the same colors in your logo, but maybe it's time for a logo refresh too?
- Although I like this image of the mountains, I would probably swap it for something else that is more in line with what you do. Because at first glance, it looks like you are a mountain climbing company, lol. I think having images of people looking peaceful would go further because people who land on your site will see that image and think 'I want that'.
- I would also have a different tag in the header instead of "rising together since 2018". It's fine to include that line somewhere else, but the header is prime real estate to show people how you can solve their problem. The fact that you've been in business since 2018 won't compel them to click the "book now" button - but a sentence that explains how you solve their problem will.
- I would remove the moving buttons in the "I'm Searching For" section... to me, this falls into that "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" category 🙂
- On the section with the logos, I would probably make that whole section a white background and then have the logos on it (without the circles). I would spread them out into a couple of lines so that it isn't so cramped.
- Some of the text is a little hard to read against the background in the Reach New Heights section.
- One thing I'm seeing is that there are a lot of options. For example, the header gives them 3 options of buttons to click. The Reach New Heights section has 2 options of buttons to click. People get overwhelmed with options - so I would consider having one button for each section.
- The If You're Feeling Down section can be reworked... I wouldn't put a huge 4 paragraph section in the 2nd accordion. This info can go on a dedicated About page.
- I understand tying things to the word "Levitate"...the mountains, the moving buttons, the wording, etc... but what is that? I mean, unless people are literally levitating, I would use words to actually explain what your services do... more peaceful, less stress, more calm, clearer mind, etc. People will identify with those words more than they will "lift each other" or "rise together".
- Look at the spacing between the text and buttons in the How You Can Get Started section.... they aren't all even.
- I would consider using a different font and adding a second font so that you can have one for headings and one for paragraphs. I do love Futura like you previously had! If your page is loading slow, it's probably because of large images instead of fonts. Check out SEOSpace - I use them for my site and they are GREAT at improving SEO and load times (there's a free version that works just fine).
- There's a lot of accordion blocks on this page! I would trim that down a bit and find another design so that there is some variation in design.
- The plus signs in the footer that expand need to go! If you do need all of these links, then I would create the footer with them already expanded so that people an easily find what they need instead of having to click 4 different drop downs to find the info.
Let me know if you have questions about anything 🙂

Hey @chuckEsleaze -
Here's a few observations -
- The pages are missing an H1 tag
- Some pages are missing meta descriptions
- Not all images have alt text (this could be effecting the accessibility component of your scan)
- All of the external links need to be set to open up a new tab
- Remove the dates on all of the quotes. They look outdated - especially the ones that go back to 2016. The words still ring true, so I would just take off the dates.
- You could fit the header links on one row if the logo was smaller and the words weren't so long in the navigation links.
- Some of the elements need more padding... like the testimonials at the bottom and the footer.
Home page:
- I would also do something different with the top image on the home page... instead of testimonials, that section should explain who they are and what they do. "Alaska's best defense attorneys" - or something. Also you'll probably need to put a box behind the text so that it can be read over the image. You can adjust the opacity of the box so that you still see the image.
- Add more padding on "We know criminal law" section
- On the home page, increase the width of the accordion blocks so that the text goes all the way from the left to right.
- Our Philosophy section - the highlight looks off... it should either only be behind the bottom half of the text, or be behind the whole text (top to bottom)..it just looks weird with a tiny sliver of the text not having a box behind it. I think it would look nice to add some icons to each of these sections too.
Let me know if you have questions about any of these 🙂

Our web speed test results always make for brutal reading. Please please please Squarespace, give us a sign, and support WebP!

Hi I have also come to this page in search of a solution to the fact that I am unable to upload Webp image types. The thing is that the speed of my page loading is causing my website to have completely lost its sales. I am a small business owner, who is also a single parent family trying to put food on the table and a roof over our heads. The fact that my page performance is showing 29% for speed performance and over 90% for all other scores such as accessibility, SEO and Best practises. I worked so many hours and so hard to achieve this but I am at a loss now. Loosing money and losing customers. Surely not having this function at this stage makes square space not fit for function and we should get some kind of compensation for our losses and the work we have put in. Especially as all these requests have not even been acknowledged.Â

WebP would really help the SEO on Squarespace; some of my blogs have a lot of images and need speeding up!

I want to second this. We have seen a real drop in our search rankings and Google consistently knocks us for not using next gen formatting. If you need to post lots of pictures on your site like us (travel site) you can reduce size and optimize jpegs only so far and they are still a lot of data.Â

I've become quite concerned reading through this thread. The fact that sqsp has spent so much effort developing Fluid Engine (which seems to scramble the DOM) and has neglected WebP format makes me worry about their priorities.

Been following this thread for over 2 years now. STILL NO WEBP! - It's absolutely shocking to me. Wix's presence at BrightonSEO and their focus on SEO improvements is making it harder and harder to recommend Squarespace to clients. No .webP support is seriously hurting right now. I'm not sure I can justify recommending SS anymore. Sad and annoying.

Hi!
I recently checked my page speed and the performance has deteriorated in the past months. From 40, it has now reduced to 40. The analysis mentions that there is unused Javascript but since these can only be done through Squarespace backend - is there any alternate method to do it?Â
Â
It also mentions minimising main-threadwork.Â
The total blocking time is also causing issue.

Here's a simpler solution:
1. Create a summary block linked to a "Blog" and set it to display 1 post at a time.
2. Now just make each testimonial be the title of a different blog post, and put the name of who wrote the testimonial as an excerpt.
3. Set the summary block to only display "Title" and "Excerpt." Turn off the "Thumbnail."

Recently we have been running speed reports on our website and noticed that the below script has been slowing down the performance of the mobile version of the site. This is the site:Â https://lilac-sailfish-7xys.squarespace.com/Â which is running on the 7.1 version.
This is the script that is slowing down the mobile version: https://assets.squarespace.com/universal/scripts-compressed/common-cc2c6334436469eb1efb1-min.en-US.jsÂ
Can anyone please advise if changing the template or removing this script would assist in changing the speed of the mobile site?
Many thanks, Karl

ryannell reacted to Marc0 in I would like to update to 7.1 but i would rather not lose 8 years of sales data and analytics
I have no problems redoing all the website layouts or any of that and frankly i would expect that with new layout tools i would have to draw up new layouts. That's a bit annoying but that's honestly expected.
But I can't copy over sales and analytics data. Losing that 8 years of history makes the switch to 7.1 the exact same level of difficulty as switching to a completely different competitive platform instead.Â
As for why i want to upgrade, I keep adding products and frankly the 7.0 templates are overflowing a bit to the point where customers are having issues narrowing it down to what they want, especially on mobile. The 7.1 layout allows for categories to be used much more efficiently. I can't even reorder categories in 7.0 which seems like pretty basic functionality. They recognize this because they added the feature in 7.1 but apparently it's ok to leave old customers in the dark.

ryannell reacted to Marc0 in I would like to update to 7.1 but i would rather not lose 8 years of sales data and analytics
Are there any plans to allow for a migration to 7.1? I'm sitting back here in 7.0 seeing all these new features being developed that would be great to keep my site looking up to date with the internet and I can't use them without throwing out 8 years of sales data and analytics.
I am really confused why squarespace would want to put an upgrade to 7.1 on equal footing to transferring to any other platform out there. I don't care if i have to redesign all my pages. It would be great if they did not all have to be done at once of course but even if they all had to be done at once that would be fine, i just don't want to lose all that data. I have saved off backups in case squarespace ever goes away of course but that does not make it searchable and able to look for trends in the data.
Deleting your site and starting over is a terrible option. Will this ever be addressed? It's been over two years of the FAQ reading "It's not currently possible to migrate directly to Squarespace 7.1" implying that it will eventually happen. I'm really starting to lose hope here.
