CORS errors all around, this is such a massive issue that SP seems deaf to its user base. No responses from support, no notifications to users on work around just very LOUD SILENCE.

Well, if anyone is interested, this is the code I got from ChatGPT which worked out pretty good and I'm happy enough with the results unless someone has a better idea:

Personally I really like fluid engine, and my websites look amazing as a result. My only two issues I'd like to see refined are:
- Blocks do shift when I edit other ones. I've been able to work around this, but I worry for my template buyers who may not be as confident in manipulating the blocks, nor understand why that's happening.
- I would like to see more control over mobile breakpoint / tablet view or another way to ensure that someone with a small laptop and who does not have a full-screen window open won't see a strange version of the site. Ideally there would be a setting that shrinks site width proportionally and locks in formatting as window gets shrunk until a mobile breakpoint is triggered.
I appreciate Squarespace, and their updates, and really don't think such extreme backlash is warranted. If you can't work with the platform, spend this energy improving your skills instead. 
 

The pagination is tricky to constrain as it doesn't have a background behind it, you can tweak the code for different portfolio pages, but not for individual portfolio items.

@Martian Give this code a go - paste in the Custom CSS panel:

Hopefully this will work as is to target just that image in the screenshot but if not let me know

@Ziggy ok, so I created a "stacked" image gallery (and added space between the images with custom CSS)  and think that's a very interesting solve and helps with a lot of the problem. however, I also have videos (native squarespace vids) which can't be put in that gallery block and also have images side by side which can't be put in there either. Hello. I'm experiencing a similar issue. I have a 7.1 site which I'm fairly happy with, and I initially thought upgrading to fluid engine would give me more options. However, I'm also stuggling to get my head around the grid. Like you I'm a graphic designer, and so I need to display designs without them being cropped, but I also need my margins to be consistent.
What I can't work out is, what is the apsect ratio of each cell in the grid? I'm not sure it has a fixed ratio (if you make you browser window smaller, it starts to look more square). Also, why are the cells rectangular? It seems to me that if they were square then figuring out aspect ratios for your images would be easier (although you would still have to factor in the cell spacing, so maybe not).
Did you figure anything out yet? My initial enthusiasm for fluid engine is giving way to frustration…

This may be a stupid question, but I just can't figure out what the aspect ratio is for the grid for this new fluid engine approach. I'm trying to update my website (which is a design portfolio), and I'm struggling to figure out what size I need to export everything at so that I can keep spacing consistent in-between separate graphics as well as keep them at the same width.
I know I can choose "fill" instead of "fit," however this then cuts off parts of the design I'm displaying - which I do not want, either. 
I guess I'm looking for some sort of information like "a block is 1" wide and the gap is .125" wide" or anything similar so I can size and export my graphics to line up with the blocks correctly, since you can't stop an edge in the middle of a block, either.
Below is an example where one way the (first) graphic doesn't line up height-wise, but then if I adjust the height, then the width doesn't line up.

I consider this a MAJOR issue with Fluid Engine. As of now you CANNOT get layouts correct on both desktop and mobile. OMG! C'mon Squarespace!

Try adding to Design > Custom CSS
